Online Safeguarding Training for Different Roles

Safeguarding Children Level 1 introduces the signs of abuse and neglect, how to respond to a disclosure and how to report a concern. It is suited to people who may encounter children or families through their work but do not have regular, direct contact with them.

Relevant legislation and guidance in England: Children Act 1989; Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026.

For professionals who work directly with children

Safeguarding Children Level 2 builds on the introductory course. It gives people with regular contact with children, young people or families a deeper understanding of how to recognise, record and report concerns. This may include staff in education, childcare, healthcare, social care and youth services.

Relevant legislation and guidance in England: Children Act 1989; Children Act 2004; Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026; Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 for schools and colleges.

For staff who support adults at risk

Safeguarding Adults Level 2 helps staff recognise abuse and neglect, respond to concerns and understand the principles of adult safeguarding. It is relevant to people who work with or support adults at risk, including staff in health and social care.

Relevant legislation and guidance in England: Care Act 2014 and its care and support statutory guidance; Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 where applicable.

Who needs safeguarding training?

Staff and volunteers who work with children or adults at risk need safeguarding training suited to their role. This includes people who have occasional contact and those who provide regular care or support. Your organisation should choose the appropriate training based on each person’s responsibilities, its safeguarding policy and the guidance that applies in your sector and part of the UK.

Which safeguarding children course should I choose?

Safeguarding Children Level 1 is an introduction for staff and volunteers who may have occasional contact with children or become aware of a concern through their work. Level 2 provides more detailed training for people who work with children regularly or have greater safeguarding responsibilities. If you’re unsure which level your role requires, check with your employer or organisation.

How often should safeguarding training be refreshed?

i2Comply safeguarding certificates do not expire, but we recommend refreshing the training after three years. Your employer, professional body or sector guidance may call for more frequent training or updates. Review your knowledge sooner when your responsibilities, safeguarding procedures or relevant guidance change.

Will I receive a certificate when I pass?

Yes. Once you pass the course assessment, you can download your safeguarding training certificate. The certificate does not expire, but it shows a recommended renewal date to help you plan a refresher.
