What does the Online Legionella Course cover?
The online Legionella Awareness course covers the following four topics:
1 – What is Legionnaires’ disease?
This topic explains what Legionnaires’ disease is and introduces other forms of legionellosis. You will learn about Legionella bacteria, where they can occur and how exposure to contaminated water systems can present a risk to health.
2 – Contracting Legionnaires’ disease
This topic explains how Legionnaires’ disease can be contracted and identifies the groups of people who may be at greater risk. You will learn how the disease is transmitted, how common it is and the symptoms and treatment associated with Legionnaires’ disease.
3 – When do Legionella bacteria become a danger?
This topic explains the conditions that can encourage Legionella bacteria to grow and multiply in water systems. You will learn about the factors that can increase the risk of Legionella and why understanding these conditions is important when managing water safety.
4 – Your water hygiene programme
This topic explains the key elements of an effective water hygiene programme and how Legionella risks can be managed and controlled. You will learn about dutyholder responsibilities, relevant UK legislation and guidance, written control schemes and the importance of maintaining appropriate records.
How is the Legionella Awareness Course assessed?
Whether you are taking the course for the first time or completing refresher training, you will take an online assessment after finishing the four topics. Questions are drawn from question banks, so they may vary between attempts.
Feedback on incorrect answers helps you identify areas to review before trying again. You can retake the assessment as many times as needed, with unlimited attempts.
Legionella Awareness Training Certificate
After passing the assessment, you can immediately download, save and print your Legionella Awareness certificate. It includes the relevant accreditation and assurance logos and provides a record of successful course completion for your organisation’s training records.
How long is a Legionella Awareness certificate valid for?
Our certificate has no fixed expiry date. We recommend refreshing your Legionella Awareness training every 2 years to maintain your understanding of the risks and control measures. A recommended renewal date appears on your certificate as a reminder.
Training needs should be reviewed sooner if responsibilities, water systems or working practices change, or gaps in knowledge are identified.
Can this certificate support SSIP assessments?
Your certificate can be submitted as evidence of completed Legionella awareness training during assessments for schemes such as CHAS and SafeContractor.
Acceptance depends on the scheme’s requirements and the work your organisation carries out. The certificate supports your training records but does not, on its own, demonstrate compliance with all Legionella management requirements or guarantee scheme approval.
