This confined space course covers employer and employee responsibilities, risk assessments, safe systems of work and emergency arrangements. It builds awareness of the importance of careful planning and safe working procedures.

Why is confined space training important?

1 – Confined Spaces and the Law
This topic introduces the legislation relevant to working in confined spaces. It explains what defines a confined space, when the regulations apply and the atmospheric and physical hazards these environments can present.
2 – Types of Confined Space
This topic explores different types of confined spaces and how changing conditions can bring a space within the scope of the regulations, either temporarily or permanently.
3 – The Specified Risks
This topic examines the specified risks associated with confined spaces. It covers flammable substances, oxygen enrichment and deficiency, excessive heat, toxic gases, liquids and free-flowing solid materials.
4 – General Hazards
This topic describes additional hazards that may arise in confined spaces, including excavation collapse, poor lighting and hot work. It also highlights relevant regulations and the importance of recognising stress and fatigue.
5 – Duties Under the Regulations
This topic outlines employer and employee responsibilities under the confined spaces regulations. It introduces the duties involved in identifying confined spaces and assessing the risks before work begins.
6 – Confined Space Risk Assessments
This topic explains who should carry out a confined space risk assessment and the priorities it should address. It highlights the importance of avoiding entry wherever possible and explores alternatives to working inside confined spaces.
7 – Safe Systems of Work
This topic explains the purpose of a safe system of work and introduces relevant HSE guidance. It covers eight key elements of a safe system and explains when a permit-to-work system is required.
8 – PPE and RPE
This topic introduces personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE). It explains their place as a last line of defence, employees’ responsibilities for using them and the risk of heat stress when wearing protective equipment.
9 – Emergency Arrangements
This topic outlines the emergency arrangements needed for confined space work, including communication, rescuer capability and rescue and resuscitation equipment. It also covers shutting down other processes where necessary and liaising with local emergency services.
How is this confined space training course assessed?
After completing the nine topics, learners take an online assessment to check their understanding. Questions are selected from question banks and may vary between attempts, supporting both initial and refresher training.
Learners have unlimited assessment attempts, with feedback to help them understand incorrect answers. They can review the course content before trying again.
Confined Space Awareness Training Certificate
On successful completion of the course, you can immediately download and print your certificate. It includes the RoSPA and CPD logos and provides evidence of completed confined space awareness training.
The certificate does not, on its own, demonstrate practical competence to enter, work in or carry out rescues from confined spaces.
How long is the confined space awareness certificate valid for?
Your certificate has no expiry date. We recommend refreshing your awareness training every 2 years to reinforce your knowledge. Your certificate includes a recommended renewal date to help you plan refresher training.
Additional or more frequent training may be needed if your tasks, equipment, working conditions or procedures change.
Can this certificate support a CHAS, SafeContractor or Constructionline assessment?
Your certificate can be submitted as evidence of completed awareness training. Acceptance depends on the scheme’s requirements and the work your organisation carries out.
Check with your assessor whether this course meets the evidence requirements for your application. Practical training and other evidence of competence may also be required.
