Online Disability Awareness training course overview
The Disability Awareness online course contains the following 6 topics:
1 – Introduction to Disability Awareness
The first topic explores common myths about disability. It explores different models of disability and outlines the impact of microaggressions and unconscious bias.
2 – Disability Statistics
The second topic provides facts and figures about disability and attitudes to disability in the UK.
3 – Disability and UK laws
The third topic outlines the Equality Act and what this means for disabled people and for organisations. It also describes other laws and policies that are relevant to disability including the Human Rights Act, the UN Convention on Disability Rights and the Public Sector Equality Duty.
4 – Being an inclusive company
Topic 4 explores reasons why an organisation should be inclusive when it comes to disability. It describes the disability employment gap and identifies some sound business reasons for inclusion. It also identifies actions that an organisation can take to be more inclusive in staff selection, interviewing and induction.
5 – Language
The fifth topic outlines the importance of language about disability. It identifies ways that language can be harmful, even when well-intentioned. The topic also provides general guidelines for respectful language, and advice about specific disabilities.
6 – Accessibility
The final topic explains why it is important to make your products and services easy to use by everyone. It identifies actions that make your services easier to use and then shows how you can improve emails, presentations and documents.
How is the Disability Awareness course assessed?
When a learner has completed all of the topics in the training course, they can take the assessment. The assessment consists of 15 questions. There is a bank of questions for each topic in the course, so the questions change each time a learner takes the assessment.
There is no limit on the number of test attempts at the Disability Awareness assessment so it can be taken as many times as necessary. Also, the feedback shows which topics the learner should revise after the assessment.
Disability Awareness training certificate and renewal
You can download your Disability Awareness certificate as soon as you have passed the online assessment.
Your certificate will include the CPD logo. This means you can use it as evidence of compliance.
How long is the Disability Awareness certificate valid?
The course certificate doesn’t include an expiry date. Although your certificate won’t expire, we recommend refreshing your knowledge every 2 years. The suggested date of renewal/refresher training is on your certificate.
